2012 Album of the Year: Alabama Shakes - Boys and Girls
It's end of the year list time - every jabberhead in the country is citing the good things that you overlooked because you're not cool. So, you know, I thought I'd pile on.

This was a solid year for music, by which of course I mean that Coldplay did not release a new album and Alabama Shakes did.Β I'm schoolgirl giddy about Boys and Girls, as you can see from the following review that I wrote several months ago:

Every now and then an album comes along that is just that good.Β I donβt know how it happens, and contrary to what they might think neither do any of the music industry professionalsΒ who try so hard to force it to happen.Β No, itβs just one of those things β the stars align, the zeitgeist is captured, something.Β Whatever it is, Alabama Shakes captured a big dose of it on their debut album Boys & Girls.
I canβt say enough good things about this album.Β If forced to vote today, Boys & Girls would be my pick for album of the year.Β The production is low-fi in a very organic way as opposed to the βcheck out all of my hipster vintage gearβ production that is de rigueur. Β The songs are right out of the Stax catalog, yet they arenβt.Β And more than anythingΒ the album features lead singer Brittany Howard.

Howard is the American corollary to Susan Boyle, the Scottish talent show phenomenon.Β Stay with me here, because I know that sounds absurd.Β The two have nothing in common aside from big pipes inside unconventional pop star bodies.Β In another era both singers would have been overlooked by a music industry obsessed with packaging, but the intergooglewebtubes killed the video star that killed the radio star.Β With the mass marketing machine more or less out of the way the music buying public can think for itself, and talent like Howardβs can shine.Β Hopefully you can see where Iβm going.Β Both acts are unconventional in an industry that seems to value artifice over content.
This is what Iβm talking about.Β Keep in mind whatever superstar you want β Rihanna, Lady Gaga β while youβre listening to the deep soul ofΒ βYou Ainβt Alone.βΒ My guess is that you heard less Ke$ha in that cut and more Janis Joplin.Β In all respects the song captures the Joplin vibe.Β Howardβs vocal performance is absolutely stellar here, using her full range β every howl, growl, and soaring note.Β The song builds to a killer finale β full-blown goosebumps.
I never get the feeling listening to Boys &Β Girls that Iβm listening to a βretroβ record.Β This isnβt sixties R&B as a fashion choice so much as a band that plays solid R&B and this is what comes out. Β If the late Amy Winehouse recorded the Shakesβs βRise to the Sunβ she wouldβve made it a monster hit.Β Letβs hope that they can do the same.
βI Found YouβΒ is another great example of a song that isnβt so much a tribute to sixties soul records as it is a sixties soul record.Β No doubt I could slip this into a sixties playlist and it would fit perfectly β the sentiment, the instrumentation, the production values.
The charming βHang Looseβ is clearly a song built around a riff and itΒ contains my favorite couplet on the album:Β βWeβre going to fly to Waikiki / Itβll just be you and me.βΒ Another sixties smash that never happened, but now it can.
If you have any love at all for people who make music buy this album.Β Donβt download it, donβt share it, buy it.Β Show this not so little anymore band from Athens, Alabama that there are still people out there who love listening to music as much as Alabama Shakes enjoys making it.Β Maybe weβll get lucky and whatβs left of the music industry will take note of the spike in sales and stop with the Pro Tools divas, too.

So there it is, my pick for album of the year.Β What's yours?Β I'm listening.
