Helping Animal Shelters Weather the Storms

Looking beyond financial contributions, there are many things we can all do to help out our local animal shelters. Oftentimes small donations of commonly used items are appreciated the most.

Shelter: something beneath, behind, or within which a person, animal, or thing is protected from storms, adverse conditions, etc.; refuge.

Sounds pretty simple doesn't it? But most of us know that it is really quite complex, not to mention expensive. Did you know that there are over 100 "shelters" within easy driving distance for those of us that live in the upstate of South Carolina? Those who run animal shelters are certainly not immune from the current economic difficulties. In fact, they are often hit hard as cash donations drop off at the same time costs begin to escalate. But remember, animal shelters need all kinds of things and every little bit really can help make a difference.

Animal shelters always need help weathering the storms. Right now they are faced with incredible heat, but before too long they will be preparing for winter, the cold, and the ice storms. Of course the ecomomic storms we are all faced with hit animal shelters where it hurts the most.

Looking beyond financial contributions, there are many things we can all do to help out our local animal shelters. Often times small donations of commonly used items are appreciated the most. Here is a quick list of common items that are usually on a shelter wish list:

  • Blankets
  • Sheets
  • Towels
  • Bleach
  • Laundry Detergent
  • Window Cleaner
  • Bandages
  • Copy Paper
  • Paper Towels
  • Toilet Tissue
  • Canned and Dry Puppy and Kitten Food
  • Milk Replacer for Puppies and Kittens
  • Flea Control Meds
  • Cat Litter and Scoops
  • Bandages (all sizes)

Don’t forget, you can donate an hour or two of your time on a regular basis too.  The easiest thing to do is ask your local shelter what they need and see if there is some little thing you can do to help. Let's all pull together and help keep them viable and effective as they share their lives with those in need.
