Tie goes to Biden
All Biden needed to do was not fall on his face in order win, and he succeeded at that.
After last weeks lackluster performance by President Obama, Vice President Joe Biden needed to come out swinging in his one and only debate with Congressman Paul Ryan. Conventional wisdom says Vice Presidential Candidates do not matter, but tell the John McCain that.
Congressman Ryan came with his facts, if that's what you want to call them. He was very polite, looked into the camera, and never raised his voice, though he did go long in speaking from time-to-time. He tried to run the show, but is a novice at debates and it showed a bit.
Biden on the other hand often seemed aggressive, interupting Ryan often, laughing out loud, smiling and having a good 'ol time. Joe beat up on Ryan a bit. One funny tweet I read said "Call 911, there is an old man beating up a kid on my tv". FOX News called him rude and angry several times in the ten minutes I could stomach watching after the debate. And while it is true that at one point he did get loud, I would call it being passionate, not really rude.

Come out swinging Joe did, and it worked. The debate was essentially a draw. Speaking time was split almost 50/50. Both men hit their speaking points and neither seemed off of their game. Neither candidate had a good zinger, though Ryan made a joke about Biden misspeaking and Biden did quip "Oh now you're Jack Kennedy" once. The thing is, the draw goes to the home team, especially after last weeks dismal showing by the President. This week Biden fired up the base, and that's really all he needed to do. Neither one of the candidates are as clueless as Sarah Palin, and neither man will cause people to vote one way or the other. All Biden needed to do was not fall on his face in order win, and he succeeded at that. Twitter and Facebook exploded with my Democratic friends saying Biden has just saved the election. It's too soon to say that... Obama still has two more debates, but he certainly stopped the bleeding, at least for now.
As a side note... I guess Big Bird's 15 minutes of fame are over? Poor guy.
