Update: Mauldin Sewer Spill Halted

Spill reached Laurel Creek; efforts underway to neutralize the environmental impact.

Updated 4:45 p.m.: Officials with Renewable Water Resources (ReWa) said the repair of a broken sewer pipe in the Knollwood Heights subdivision in Mauldin is now completed and flow has been restored. Service was not interrupted, the utility said.

The sewage spill reached receiving streams (Laurel Creek to the Reedy River), so residents are advised to avoid the waterways until further notice. ReWa approximates the spill total at 150,000 gallons and is taking efforts to neutralize the environmental effect. SCDHEC has been notified.

Original story: A fallen tree broke a 12-inch above-ground sewer pipe in the Knollwood Heights subdivision of Mauldin creating a sanitary sewage spill.

Renewable Water Resources' (ReWa) immediately responded to the the break this morning and has been pumping the area. A contractor meanwhile is onsite to repair it.

The spill and repair will not affect ReWa's ability to provide service to the area, the utility said.

ReWa is currently assessing the volume of the spill and environmental impact, and SCDHEC has been notified. The spill has reached receiving streams (Laurel Creek to the Reedy River), so residents are advised to avoid the waterways until further notice.
