Former DOR Tech Chief Takes Partial Blame for Data Hack

Former state revenue department chief information officer Mark Garon spoke before a House committee Thursday.

The state revenue department's former chief information officer told a House panel Thursday he bore at least some responsibility for the hack that exposed millions of SC taxpayers private information.

Former CIO Mark Garon said the department's security position prior to the massive data theft was "in a high-risk situation," WIS reported.

"Am I responsible for some element of this? Yes," Garon told the committee.

Garon resigned weeks before discovery of the hack in October, ands not related to the security breach.

According to the station's report, Rep. Harry Ott advanced a theory that the former CIO could have been scapegoated to cover the month-long delay in in fixing the breach.
