Need Work? Greenville School District Seeking Bus Drivers and Aides

Job fair at Mauldin High on Monday draws more than one hundred job seekers as school district seeks to fill dozens of vacancies for drivers.

With dozens of slots available, more than a hundred job seekers converged on on Monday seeking work as school district bus drivers and bus aides.

"To be at a full complement, we need about 55 or 60 drivers," said Mike Humbert, the Human Resources manager for the Greenville School District's hourly work group.

Miss Monday's job fair? You can apply for a bus driver or aide position through S.C. Works, at its McCallister Square location, at 225 South Pleasantburg Drive, Suite E-1, in Greenville. Bus aides are used on special-needs' buses where an extra adult may be required.

You can apply anytime, but definitely the sooner the better, Humbert said.

"It'll take from now until about the time that school starts to get someone through the bus-driver training program," he said, adding that training lasts about three weeks.

Bus driver positions aren't for everyone — the key to retention is training and getting through your first year, Humbert said. But they can be great positions for certain people, Humbert said, including retirees and those who want summers off.

"It also appeals to people who have their own business, but who need benefits for them and their own family," he added.

"We can offer great benefits, health and dental, full-time employment, and decent pay," said Humbert. The pay ranges, at the moment, from $11.22 to $14 per hour, he said, but that could increase by two percent if a currently vetoed state budget with planned increases is finally approved by the state legislature.
