Report: Mauldin Crime Rate Decreased in 2012

Declines seen in nearly every major category, Chief Turner says.

Mauldin saw its crime rate drop across the board in 2012, according to city Police Chief Bryan Turner.

With the exception of arson, which remain unchanged, declines were seen in every major crime category in 2012, Turner said.

According to a report from WSPA, "Sexual assaults, or rapes, decreased by 42.9%. The city reported 7 in 2011, and had 4 in 2012. Robberies also went down by 44.4%. There were 18 reported in 2011, and that dropped to 10 in 2012. Murders decreased by 100%, since the city saw just one homicide in 2011, and none in 2012."

"When I looked at the numbers at first, I actually called down to our records clerk and said, are these right?" Turner told the station. "It marks the first year since I've been here we've had a decrease in all areas of crime."
