New Career & Tech Ed Teacher – Jennifer Parnell
Jennifer was working in NASCAR before she became a teacher. She has taught in the Pee Dee area for four years and one year from home as a virtual school teacher. She is certified in middle and secondary social studies, business and has her gifted and talented endorsement.

Math Department Welcomes Michele Obuszewski
Obuszewski (Mrs. O) is married and has 2 sons in middle school. She taught in Myrtle Beach for the last nine years. In her free time, she enjoys reading, running, biking and walking.

Early Dismissals
Students who have an early dismissal and return to school during the same day must check in with the attendance office upon their return.

Three MHS National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalists!
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has announced their National Merit Semi-Finalists. Receiving this honor from Mauldin High School are: Kathleen Cole, Brittany Fales, and Morgan Rogers. Mauldin High's three semi-finalists will have the opportunity to continue with this prestigious competition and be notified in the spring.

Fine Arts Center College Day – Friday, 9/28
The Fine Arts Center invites interested students to attend their College Day Program on Friday, September 28. Mauldin High School students may attend the afternoon session beginning at 1:30 and will have an opportunity to meet representatives from colleges that have arts programs. Students must provide their own transportation or get permission to ride the Fine Arts Center bus. Interested students must obtain a prearranged absence form from the guidance department and return it directly to Dr. Childs by September 24. There is a limit of ten students who may attend (first come, first serve).


Underclass Picture Orders Due by Friday, 9/28
The PROOF PAGES for underclass pictures were distributed through English classes. If you would like to purchase the pictures, please fill out the detachable envelope with payment to Piedmont Portraits. Orders are due to Mrs. Beth Ward in B136 by Friday, September 28th

Payment for “We Bleed Orange T-shirt” Due
All Operation Orange members who purchased a “We Bleed Orange” t-shirt, need to bring their payment of $9 to Mrs. Christine Thomas in room D123 by Wednesday, 9/26.

College Fair Field Trip - October 9
Interested juniors and seniors may sign-up in the Guidance Department to attend the annual College Fair field trip which will be held on the morning of October 9. The deadline to sign-up is October 1.

PSAT Information
Mauldin High School will administer the PSAT to all 10th graders and interested 11th graders on October 17, 2012. The PSAT is only given one time per school year. All 10th graders will automatically be scheduled to take the test free of charge. Tenth graders do not need to sign-up or pay. Eleventh graders may take the test for a fee of $14. College bound 11th graders are encouraged to take the PSAT in order to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program and to gain extra practice prior to taking the SAT in the spring. Junior PSAT Registration Deadline Extended
There are a few spaces still available for any junior who would like to take the PSAT in October. Students may register in guidance through Wednesday, September 26 or until all spaces are filled - whichever comes first. This is the only time juniors may take the PSAT for National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

MLK Dream Scholarships
Eleven scholarships are available to Greenville County students through the Martin Luther King, Jr. Dream Weekend Program. Applications may be picked up in guidance. Deadline for receipt of all materials is October 2nd. Scholarship is available to all seniors with at least a 3.25 or higher GPA.

USSYP Scholarship
The United States Senate Youth Program is offering a $5,000 scholarship to two students in the state of South Carolina. If you currently hold an office in Student Government and are a senior or junior at Mauldin High School, please come by Mrs. Dalton Kelsey's office in guidance to pick up the information for this scholarship. Deadline is September 27th.

SC Discovering Manufacturing Design Challenge.
Students who wish to participate in the SC Discovering Manufacturing Design Challenge must research manufacturing websites, write an essay, and design a creative advertisement to address a real world problem. The first place winner will receive a $300.00 prize, and a $200.00 award will be given to the winner’s school. Submissions and registration forms should be given to Laurie Gallego by Mon. Dec. 17. School Lunches Based on New Federal USDA Requirements
School lunches across America are based on new United States Department of Agriculture requirements to improve students’ nutrition by reducing calories, providing more fruit and vegetables, and decreasing protein, bread and sodium. Previously, school lunches could exceed USDA minimum requirements. That is no longer allowed. Posters will be displayed in serving lines advising students of the food items that must be chosen. High school lunch will be 750-850 calories. Students can take 3-5 offerings and must take a fruit or vegetable. Fruits – ½ cup minimum – Vegetables – ½ cup minimum – Protein – 2 oz. - Grain – 2 oz. minimum – Milk – Fat free or 1% low fat – 1 cup
