
Science Department Welcomes Three New Instructors
Laquana Standifer comes to MHS with 10 years of teaching experience. She was the 2006-2007 Teacher of the Year at Tanglewood Middle School.
Standifer is an avid basketball fan and coached the Lady Centurions at Tanglewood Middle for two years. She graduated from USC Upstate with a degree in biology and received her Master of Arts in Teaching degree in biology form Converse College. Standifer is married and the mother of three handsome young men.
Peter Alewine grew up in the Powdersville area. He attended Wheaton College in Illinois and then taught for two years in Texas. Alewine is an avid chess player and along with his wife, is a musician. He plays the guitar and piano and does occasional performances.
Rhett Watson is from Greenville and graduated from Blue Ridge High. He earned his undergraduate degree at Furman and then his graduate degree at Clemson University. Watson has three children. He loves teaching at Mauldin High.
Speech and Debate Team Success
The following students placed at the North Mecklenburg Speech and Debate Tournament on Saturday, Oct. 13:
- Vicky Bham: 3rd place in Congressional Debate
- Justin Romero: 5th place in Impromptu Speaking
- William Woods and Laura Collyer: 6th in Duo Interpretation
Marching Mavs Earn Grand Champion
The MHS Marching Band earned Grand Champion on Saturday, Oct. 6, outscoring 18 other band programs. The (still undefeated) color guard was also the highest of the day. This is the 6th Grand Champion award that these seniors have earned since they started their freshman year, and they have outscored 50 other bands in the past two competitions alone.
Three MHS Students Selected for Region 2 Honors Orchestra
Six MHS students tried out for Region 2 Honors Orchestra. (Region 2 is comprised of Anderson, Greenville, Oconee, and Pickens Counties.) Out of 103 students that auditioned MHS had 3 selected:
- Hannah Pullias - Second Violin
- Ronald Tep - Second Violin
- Xavier Caldwell - Bass
Tennis Team Fundraiser – Thursday, Oct. 18
The Lady Mavs tennis team’s current record is 15-0. Please come support the two-time State Champions on Thursday at Pizza Inn on Woodruff Road from 4-10 p.m. These ladies will be your servers and all tips will go to the tennis team. Go Mavericks!
