Important news and notes for parents and students of Mauldin High.

No temporary ID's beginning Thursday, 9/20
Temporary IDs will no longer be available for purchase beginning Thursday, September 20. Students will be required to purchase an ID – $5 CASH ONLY – before or after school. Students who do not have a permanent ID will spend the day in ISS.
MHS welcomes new World Language, Fine Arts & Special Ed Teachers:
— Debbie Rutledge – World Language/English Departments: Before coming to MHS, Debbie Rutledge, the new World Language teacher worked for 12 years as a Guardian ad Litem and as a court translator. Before that, she taught English and Spanish at Dorman High, at a public school in Alabama and at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Rutledge was born in Arkansas, but spent her childhood in Costa Rica and Mexico. She met her husband, David, at Furman and has been married for 35 years. They have two sons.
Rutledge is working on a novel. Her other interests include reading, cooking and music. She is active in the music and Hispanic ministry at her church, as well as serving as a lay worship leader.
— Sydney Manor – Fine Arts Department: Manor is originally from Washington, D.C. Before she began college, Manor spend a year in Sweden. Manor student-taught at MHS so feels at home at MHS.
— Jennifer Scarbrough – Special Ed Department: Scarbrough attended Riverside High School and graduated from USC Upstate. She has 5 tutorial classes at MHS. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, camping and anything outdoors. She is very excited about this school year and being a spirited Maverick!
— Christine Bush – Special Ed Department: Bush grew up in Spartanburg, where she attended Dorman High School. She graduated from Columbia College and then earned her M.A.T. at Converse College. She works as a tennis pro during the summer and on weekends. She enjoys live music, traveling and spending time with friends and family.
Underclass Picture Orders Due by Friday, 9/28

The PROOF PAGES for underclass pictures were distributed through English classes. If you would like to purchase the pictures, please fill out the detachable envelope with payment to Piedmont Portraits. Orders are due to Beth Ward in B136 by Friday, September 28th
JV and Varsity Girls Basketball Informational Meeting – Monday, 9/17
There will be a meeting for any girls interested in playing JV or Varsity basketball on Monday, September, 17th from 3:55-4:15 in room Coach Shelly Sands’ Room A105.
Underclassmen Makeup Picture Day – Tuesday, 9/18

Tuesday, September 18th will be makeup picture day for the underclassmen and faculty. The photographer will be in the auditorium before school and during all three lunch shifts.
Senior Class Group Photo – Tuesday, 9/18 at 8:45 a.m.
The senior class group picture will be taken in the gym at 8:45 a.m.
FBLA Service Project for Senior Citizens – Tuesday, 9/18
FBLA’s first senior service project will be Tuesday from 4-5. Please sign up on the sheet outside D125 if you plan on attending. Remember to return your membership form and dues to Susan Theisen in D125 by October 1st.
Robotics Team Open House – Tuesday, 9/18 – 7-9 p.m.
The robotics team invites interested students and their parents to an open house on Tuesday, September 18 from 7-9 pm at the FLASH learning center at the Merovan Center Suite C33 at 1200 Woodruff Road. See Nancy Zende in B110 for more information.
Operation Orange Meeting – Thursday, 9/20 at 8:15 a.m.
The next meeting will be Thursday, September 20th @ 8:15am in the Auditorium. All members should plan to attend. All members who purchased a T-shirt must pay for their t-shirt by Thursday. The cost is $9.
Academy Day 2012 – Saturday, 9/22
U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham will host the Academy Day 2012 on Saturday, September 22 at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia. Participants will have an opportunity to hear presentations from the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy and others as well as a chance to meet various representatives. Be A Fan Club Meeting – Tuesday, 9/25 at 8 a.m.
Students interested in joining the Be A Fan Club should pick up an application in Room D134 as soon as possible. The first meeting will be Tuesday, September 25th at 8:00am in Room D142.
SC Governor's School for the Arts Information Session – Tuesday, 9/25
The SC Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities will host an information session for 8th, 9th and 10th grade students and their parents to learn more about their Summer Programs and the Residential High School Program. The session will be held on September 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the Pelham Road Public Library. Contact LaurenMaxwell@scgsah.state.sc.us or call 864 282-3801 for more information.
Girls Lacrosse Informational Meeting – Wednesday, 9/26
Any girl interested in playing lacrosse should meet with Coach Steve Frady on Sept 26, 4 pm in the media center.
Fine Arts Center College Day – Friday, 9/28
The Fine Arts Center invites interested students to attend their College Day Program on Friday, September 28. Mauldin High School students may attend the afternoon session beginning at 1:30 and will have an opportunity to meet representatives from colleges that have arts programs. Students must provide their own transportation or get permission to ride the Fine Arts Center bus. Interested students must obtain a prearranged absence form from the guidance department and return it directly to Dr. Childs by September 24. There is a limit of ten students who may attend (first come, first serve).

PSAT Information
Mauldin High School will administer the PSAT to all 10th graders and interested 11th graders on October 17, 2012. The PSAT is only given one time per school year. All 10th graders will automatically be scheduled to take the test free of charge. Tenth graders do not need to sign-up or pay. Eleventh graders may take the test for a fee of $14. College bound 11th graders are encouraged to take the PSAT in order to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program and to gain extra practice prior to taking the SAT in the spring. 11th Grade PSAT Registration Dates
September 17 – 21: Interested 11th graders must sign-up and pay to take the PSAT during lunch shifts outside of the Guidance Office. September 21st is the absolute deadline for 11th graders to register and pay the $14 fee. All 10th graders will automatically be registered and given the test on October 17th. (Closer to the time of the test administration, students will receive notification of the specific times and room locations where testing will occur.)
USSYP Scholarship
The United States Senate Youth Program is offering a $5,000 scholarship to two students in the state of South Carolina. If you currently hold an office in Student Government and are a senior or junior at Mauldin High School, please come by Dalton Kelsey's office in guidance to pick up the information for this scholarship. Deadline is September 27th.
