GCSO: Simpsonville Suspect Admits Murderous Intent

Shane Kelly Young is accused of homicide and faces other charges in Greer standoff.

According to a Greenville County Sheriff's Office warrant, a Simpsonville man said in a audiotaped conversation that he forced his way into a Greer residence "with the intent to commit murder," according to a Greenville News report.

A source told the newspaper the recorded conversation took place during a hostage situation, which eventually turned deadly.

Shane Kelly Young, 30, of 3028 Fork Shoals Road in Simpsonville, faces a first-degree burglary charge, and more charges are pending, the sheriff's office said.

Kenneth Darrell Horton, 48, of Greer, was shot with a rifle once in the chest and found face down in a bedroom in what was ruled a homicide, according to Greenville County Deputy Coroner Barry Wright. Authorities said they believe the victim was the new boyfriend of Young's ex-girlfriend.

After hostage negotiations broke down, S.W.A.T. personnel stormed the residence, breaching the door with explosives. Two deputies and the suspect were wounded in the resulting shootout, though all three sustained non-life threatening injuries and are recovering, the sheriff's office said.

One young girl who was being held hostage reportedly received a cut on her leg.
