Grounsell Supporters Flock to Facebook

A "We support Police Chief Keith Grounsell" page on Facebook is bursting with members and comments in the wake of Simpsonville Police Chief's abrupt firing.

Supporters of fired Simpsonville Police Chief Keith Grounsell have flocked to Facebook to protest his termination on a specially created "We support Police Chief Keith Grounsell" community page.

"This page is for those who support Simpsonville (SC) Police Chief Keith Grounsell who was wrongfully terminated in a cowardly way!," the page says in its "About" section.

Grounsell was fired late Friday night by City Council in a 5-2 vote. Council members and city administrator Russ Hawes have declined to discuss the reasoning behind the firing, citing it as an internal personnel matter.

The site, created on Dec. 29, the day after Grounsell's firing, had more than 1,000 "likes" by Sunday evening and continues to grow rapidly. The population of Simpsonville is just 19,000, but support has also spilled over to other areas, most notable Mauldin, where Grounsell is originally from and whose parents own and operate the popular Gretchen's ABS Cakes on N. Main Street.
