Prescription Drug Take-Back Planned for Saturday

Local law enforcement, in partnership with other groups, will be collecting unwanted prescription medications today.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has scheduled another National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day which will take place today from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is a great opportunity for those who missed the previous events, or who have subsequently accumulated unwanted, unused prescription drugs, to safely dispose of those medications.

The closest local disposal centers:

  • Simpsonville Police Department, 405 E. Curtis St.
  • Fountain Inn Activity Center, 610 Fairview St.
  • Greenville Law Enforcement Center, 4 McGee St.
  • McKleskey Todd Pharmacy, 109 N. Main St., Greer

This is the fifth year the DEA has held the Prescription Drug Take Back Day in an effort to prevent drug abuse and theft. During the four previous drug take-back days, Americans turned in more than 1.6 million pounds in prescription medications, according to a DEA press release.

“The growing response to DEA’s National Take Back Day events demonstrates that the public understands, and wants to help combat, the epidemic of prescription drug abuse in America,"  said DEA Administrator Michele Leonhart. "They recognize the need to rid their homes of dangerous controlled substance medications that teens and others steal, abuse, and sell."
