'Simpsonville Honors' Flag Field Comes to Life at Veteran's Memorial

Local Boy Scout troop and others place thousands of flags honoring U.S. service members ahead of Simpsonville's Veteran's Day ceremony Nov. 11.

Simpsonville Boy Scouts, troop leaders, parents, Verizon Wireless employees, and others spent Saturday afternoon erecting a flag field around Simpsonville's Veteran's Memorial (see photo gallery above).

The flags, honoring U.S. service members, will adorn the city's Veteran's Memorial on Main Street ahead of a Veteran's Day ceremony set for 2 p.m. on Nov. 11.

The Simpsonville Honors Flag Field began in July 2012 as a project to bring the community together for a massive patriotic display in honor of Veterans Day, according to organizer Mark Rodeffer.

“Community members can sponsor a flag for $5, or $10 for a larger flag with the name of your honoree on a yellow ribbon, and we’re giving a portion of proceeds to the local Wounded Warriors Regiment,” he said.

Rodeffer also commented that flag sponsorships will continue through November 15, and the project currently has over $1,000 for the Wounded Warrior Regiment.

When all is said and done, Rodeffer said the field should have around 4,000 flags.

"Personally, I'm ecstatic that as a first-year project we were actually able to get around 4,000 flags and put them into the ground and still give back to the Wounded Warriors Project," Rodeffer told Patch.

The flags will be on display at the park until Nov. 17, he said.
