Simpsonville Honors Flag Field Sets Installation Date

Thousands of flags will be placed next to city's Veterans Monument on November 3 in anticipation of Veteran's Day.

The 2012 Simpsonville Honors Flag Field will be installed on November 3 at 1 p.m., according to organizer Mark Rodeffer.

Thousands of flags will adorn the city's Veteran's Memorial ahead of a Veteran's Day ceremony set for 2 p.m. on Nov. 11.

In preparation for the installation of thousands of flags, the field next to Simpsonville’s Veterans Memorial will first be maintained by the City of Simpsonville and then prepped by a team of volunteers from Verizon Wireless.

The City’s Parks and Recreation department will perform a final grass cutting and other maintenance items a few days before the installation.  The morning of the installation will see a team of volunteers from Verizon Wireless marking all the flag locations in preparation for the Boy Scouts.

“Verizon Wireless employees are very excited to show our support of our veterans by partnering with Simpsonville Honors," said Karen Schulz, Verizon Wireless spokesperson. "This is a great way to show our appreciation to our veterans, serve the community and grow closer as a team. We are very much looking forward to prepping the field for the flags and attending the Veteran’s Day ceremony with the city of Simpsonville.”

At 1 p.m. on November 3, local Boy Scout troops from Simpsonville will begin the process of installing the flags in the ground and continue until several thousand flags have been evenly spaced.

Southbounder District Executive Deanna Navarini said: "Learning to be a good citizen is a foundational element of our programs in Boy Scouts of America. By participating in projects like this, boys can demonstrate and experience what it means to be good citizens to their community and nation as well as the world."

Upon completion of of flag installation the Boy Scouts will be treated to complimentary hot dogs from Simpsonville’s Sonic Drive-in and ice cream from The Ice Cream Station, Rodeffer said.

Still time to sponsor a flag

The Simpsonville Honors Flag Field began in July 2012 as a project to bring the community together for a massive patriotic display in honor of Veterans Day.

Rodeffer, a local businessman, envisioned this flag field and is leading the project to completion. He said deeply appreciates everyones support of this project so far, and noted there is still plenty of time to sponsor a flag.

“Community members can sponsor a flag for $5, or $10 for a larger flag with the name of your honoree on a yellow ribbon, and we’re giving a portion of proceeds to the local Wounded Warriors Regiment,” he said.

Rodeffer also commented that flag sponsorships will continue through November 15, and the project currently has over $1,000 for the Wounded Warrior Regiment.
