Sixteen Sex Offenders Reside Near Simpsonville Elementary School

SLED requires all convicted sex offenders residing in SC to publicly register their address with the state.

At least 16 convicted sex offenders live within a two-mile radius of Simpsonville Elementary School, according to a registry maintained by the S.C. Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

A majority of the offenders — at least 13 — have been convicted of crimes against minors, the rest are either guilty of crimes against adults or victims' whose ages are not specified, according to SLED's database.

An additional sex offender, Johnny Barnard Jones, convicted in New York state in 1992 for second-degree rape, is wanted by authorities for failing to register, according to SLED. Jones' last registered address was 304 W. College St., in Simpsonville.

Like other states, South Carolina requires that convicted sex offenders register their addresses anytime they move.
