• Secretive Texas housing agency builds an apartment empire 1,500 miles away (houstonchronicle.com) — A Texas public housing nonprofit has quietly bought an apartment complex in Greer as part of a $400 million multistate portfolio, converting properties to tax-advantaged "affordable" housing. Local officials in the Carolinas worry these opaque deals can displace current tenants, remove Greer-area properties from tax rolls, and reshape communities without meaningful local input or clear rent reductions. 
• McMaster signs supplemental spending bill directing $9.2 million to Golden Strip projects (whosonthemove.com) — Greer is set to receive $4 million from a new state supplemental spending bill for a fire and police training facility and a public safety training center, part of a wider Greenville County package. The law, signed Sept. 1 by Gov. Henry McMaster, redirects leftover state funds to hundreds of local projects, while sparking debate over lawmakers' use of a separate bill for earmarks.
