1. Head Start seats represent future of Chattanooga Westside (wdef.com) — Families in Chattanooga's Westside now have 40 Head Start seats filled at the historic James A. Henry building, with space for 20 more and plans to expand beyond 90. The program offers affordable early childhood education for income-eligible families, helping children build language, math, and emotional skills while supporting parents who can't afford private childcare. Interested families can apply now for open spots.

2. Local history organizations awarded $35K for Black cemetery storytelling project (timesfreepress.com) — A new $35,000 state grant will help Chattanooga groups Picnooga and the African American Cemetery Preservation Fund share stories from Pleasant Garden Cemetery through live monologue performances. Residents can attend three free October shows at Dodds Avenue venues and the cemetery itself, learning about 12 African Americans who shaped Chattanooga's Black history and helped build the community you live in today.

3. Soddy-Daisy child will receive 2,000th Make-A-Wish of East TN (local3news.com) — A Soddy-Daisy girl's wish for a Chuck E. Cheese pizza party will turn into a Chattanooga-wide adventure as Make-A-Wish East Tennessee grants its 2,000th wish on Sept. 9. Isabelle will ride by limousine to several Chattanooga locations collecting symbolic purple tickets before ending with a celebration at Chuck E. Cheese in Northgate. Organizers say her joyful quest captures the spirit of every wish they grant.

4. Linda Gail Chastain (chattanoogan.com) — Family and friends in the Chattanooga and Hixson area are mourning 73-year-old Linda Gail Chastain, a longtime TVA boilermaker welder and North Hixson Church of God attendee. Loved for her gardening and collecting hobbies, she is survived by her husband of 57 years, two daughters, grandchildren, and extended family. Visitation is Sept. 8, with services Sept. 9 at Chattanooga Funeral Home's North Chapel.

5. Shane Morrow remembered as 'fearless' mentor, arts advocate and friend (timesfreepress.com) — Chattanooga residents are remembering arts leader and Jazzanooga cofounder Shane Morrow as a fearless mentor who elevated local Black musical heritage and nurtured young performers. Friends, collaborators, and Mayor Tim Kelly praise his advocacy for East Chattanooga and inclusive arts spaces. A public celebration of life is planned Sept. 20 at the Walker Theatre in Memorial Auditorium.
