Smart Yards and Friends Festival set for Sept. 12 (thedailytimes.com) — Knoxville residents can dive into eco-friendly yard ideas at the Smart Yards and Friends Festival on Saturday, Sept. 12, at UT Gardens on Jacob Drive. From composting and rain gardens to native plants and wildlife-friendly landscaping, the free event offers expert talks, hands-on guidance from Master Gardeners, and raffle giveaways for items like a rain barrel and worm bin.
   

2. Faizon Brandon stars in debut, No. 20 Tennessee routs Furman (statenews.net) — Tennessee fans in Knoxville just watched a breakout debut from freshman quarterback Faizon Brandon, who led the Vols to a 56-9 rout of Furman at home. His three passing and two rushing touchdowns powered a 638-yard offensive explosion that also showcased strong performances from DeSean Bishop and Mike Matthews.
   

3. Tennessee Sheriffs' Association recognizes outstanding leadership and service (lebanondemocrat.com) — Tennessee sheriffs recently honored law enforcement leaders statewide, including retired Knoxville Police Chief Phil Keith, who received the Lion Award for his long-term contributions to public safety. The conference in Murfreesboro also named Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis Sheriff of the Year, underscoring how Knoxville's law enforcement community is recognized alongside peers across Tennessee for professionalism and service.
   

4. Severe weather could impact millions over Labor Day weekend (abcnews.com) — Knoxville is under a level 2 of 5 slight risk for severe storms this Labor Day weekend, with damaging winds and flash flooding the main concerns. While other regions also face threats, local residents should stay alert for heavy downpours, gusty winds, and possible hail as scattered storms move through.
   

5. RT Lodge owners make $1.5M commitment to MC's Alexander Institute (thedailytimes.com) — A major new conservation and education institute in nearby Maryville is moving forward with a $1.5 million gift from David and Annie Colquitt, honoring longtime Knoxville philanthropist Natalie Haslam. The Alexander Institute and its Natalie Leach Haslam Center will focus on Smokies conservation, environmental education, and regional wellness, giving Knoxville-area residents a future destination for hands-on learning about Southern Appalachia's natural resources.
