Tour of the Herring Hotel shows it's not a has been, but a will be (amarillo.com) — A long-vacant landmark at 3rd and Pierce is on track to become a 231-room, five‑star boutique hotel that could reopen to Amarillo guests by early 2029. Developer Todd Harmon is restoring the historic Herring Hotel's grand lobby, ballroom, Tascosa Room and even Amarillo Slim's old gambling space, aiming to revive downtown with new restaurants, shops, a rooftop lounge and an outdoor pool.

2. Amarillo Police Department fires officer for 'alleged misuse of department resources' (abc7amarillo.com) — Amarillo police have fired Officer Christian Eder after an internal investigation found he improperly used department resources, according to a department news release. His last day with APD was July 17, and a separate criminal investigation has been opened, with the case now in the hands of the Potter County Attorney's Office and no further details released yet.

3. Amarillo Fire Department working fire in northwest Amarillo Wednesday evening (myhighplains.com) — Fire crews are working a residential fire in northwest Amarillo near the 2000 block of NW 14th, where flames damaged a structure and spread into a nearby field before the grass fire was contained. Two dogs were found dead and another injured, but no people or firefighters were hurt as investigators work to determine what happened in this developing incident.

4. Tradewind Airport Museum opens to the public (newschannel10.com) — Amarillo's Tradewind Airport Museum is now open to the public, showcasing the Panhandle's aviation and NASA history, including ties to local astronauts Rick Husband and Paul Lockhart. Located across from Shelby's Diner, the free museum is packed with aircraft models, stories of women in aviation, and decades of Tradewind Airport history, and welcomes visitors Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

5. 2026 Countdown to Kickoff: Palo Duro Dons (newschannel10.com) — Palo Duro High's football team in Amarillo is gearing up to follow a historic 10‑2 season with another strong run in Class 5A Division II. Coach Eric Mims Sr. and his players emphasize discipline, physical play and early‑morning work as they aim to defend their district title and, as the seniors put it, "run the city again" this fall.
