Ambulance Wreck, Shootings, Fatal Crash: Weekend Police Roundup

DALLAS, TX — First responders in Dallas had a busy weekend, as evidenced by the police beat roundup below. From an ambulance crash to a deadly hit and run to a shooting, see what you missed below.


Southwest Dallas Homicide

A Saturday evening shooting left one man dead and one jailed.

Juan Cruz, 36, was shot one time around 8:50 p.m. in the 600 block of Edgedale Drive. He was taken to a nearby hospital but later died from his injury, police said.

Detectives' investigation identified a shooting suspect as Dylan Taylor, 20, who was arrested on a warrant.

Police said efforts to interview him proved unsuccessful as he invoked his fifth amendment to remain silent.

Taylor remains jailed on a charge of murder and $250,000 bail.


Deadly Crash

An early Sunday morning crash in the 3600 block of Northaven left one person dead and several others at large.

Police said Mario Borjas, 31, was driving westbound on Northaven when he ran a flashing red light and entered the intersection of Northaven and Marsh Lane.

At the same time, another car, who had a flashing yellow light in the intersection, drove into Borjas' car, causing it to spin and roll.

Leann Sanchez, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from Borjas' car, police said. She was pronounced dead at Parkland Hospital.

The driver of the second vehicle, along with five passengers, fled the scene and failed to stop and render aid, police said.

Borjas was transported to Parkland Hospital with a head laceration and was placed under arrest for Criminally Negligent Homicide.


South-Central Dallas Shooting

One man was injured in a shooting in South Central Dallas early Sunday morning.

Police said the victim was driving southbound on Hampton Road when he passed an unknown person driving north on the same road.

Both drivers turned east on Illinois Avenue, police said, and the shooting suspect turned his or her car to take up several lanes of Hampton Road.

The victim tried to pass the car, and a weapon was fired from the suspect's car.

The victim was taken to a nearby hospital with unknown injuries and the suspect fled.

The shooting remains under investigation.


Ambulance Crash

Two paramedics and a patient received minor injuries early Monday morning when a Dallas Fire Rescue ambulance was struck by a car near Deep Ellum.

Police said in a statement Ambulance No. 44 was taking a patient to Baylor Hospital around 1:45 a.m. when a 23-year-old driver struck the back-right quarter of the ambulance, forcing it to spin.

The ambulance then rolled onto its left side and came to rest in the 4100 block of Worth Street at the intersection of N. Haskell.

The 23-year-old driver was uninjured, and paramedics complained of pain only, police said. The patient in the ambulance, 28, complained of pain to his hop, collarbone and lower back.

No charges are pending.
