Fort Worth Reserve Base Reopens After Suspicious Package Found

The base reopened after investigators gave the package the all-clear.

FORT WORTH, TX — The Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth closed all its gates Monday afternoon, citing a security-related "ongoing incident." The gates have since reopened.

Karin Krause, a public affairs officer for the base, told Patch the closure came after a suspicious package was found near the Commercial Vehicle Gate of the base at approximately 12:51 p.m.

Security forces and the 301st Fighter Wing Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team responded to the package, Krause said. Police meanwhile redirected traffic in the area bordering Alta Mere Drive and 183.

Kimberly Velasquez, a passer-by, told Patch she saw a large police presence around the base, as well as traffic backups in the area.

"My parents couldn’t get on base because the line was too long," she told Patch. "Outside traffic was being diverted behind Rigmar Mall. Lots of police."

Calls placed to the base were not immediately returned.

The base reopened around 2:30 p.m.

According to the base's website, the area serves as the first Joint Reserve base in the country.

"...our mission is to provide unsurpassed support and quality training for our Reserve and Guard 'war fighters' in all branches of the Armed Services. Our 10,000 active duty military, Reserve and Guard personnel, and civilian team members work hard to accomplish that mission, and we take great pride in our contributions to national defense and to the community,' the website states.
