1. Known for putting on brilliant shows, what is your favorite part about performing, collaborating and taking the stage?
Find out what's happening in Austinfor free with the latest updates from Patch.
My favorite part about performing is finding those folks in the audience who are falling in love with the songs and the stories behind them. The connection that happens then is truly magical. Those people understand the stories and situations I’m talking/singing about are my people, and I love it when we find each other!
2. Overall, what are your favorite venues to play in Austin? Where do you connect with fans the most?
Gosh, there are soooo many great venues in Austin, it’s hard to pick just one. I’ve had some great shows at Patsy’s Cafe, such a cool iconic Austin venue and the crowd there is always receptive to original music and they want to hear the stories behind the songs. When the audience is really listening and I can interact with them, that really makes the show for me.
3. When creating songs, what inspirations and aspirations did you have in mind? What was the backing behind the story you wanted to portray on the new record?
The current batch of songs I’m releasing are about the relationships I’ve had (for better or worse) that have shaped the woman I am today. For example, the first single, “Silent Storm” is about a person in my life who would blow in like a hurricane, stir everything up, and then disappear for years. Then they would show up again out of the blue and do it all over again until I finally got to the point that I had to stop letting that happen. The second song “Hearts On Fire” speaks more to the sensual side of who I am. Inspired by an erotic poem, I decided to use the imagery in that poem and write my own story into it.
4. On a personal note, which song that you've written would you say is your favorite, or the one that speaks the most to you?
That’s a tough one; it's like picking your favorite child. If I had a gun to my head, I’d have to say "You Rescued Me.” That song resonates with so many people, and I love hearing the stories of how they were rescued or how they rescued someone else. I don’t know of a person on this Earth who hasn’t needed a helping hand at some point in their life and the people who step up and help us get to that next step are vital to our survival. I have been rescued many times, and without those people who helped me when I needed it, I would not be where I am or who I am today.
5. On the new songs, who are the key players that made the record happen?
The songs so far have been brought to life with the help of Aaron Kemkaran from Studio 7, and my friends Erik Kinservik and Robert Skorpil. Aaron and I did all the instruments and vocals on “Silent Storm,” but for “Hearts On Fire” (and the next few songs coming out) I brought Erik in to do drums and Robert for bass guitar. We had a blast working together in the studio and I look forward to doing more songs with them in the future.
6. Do you self-produce or use an outside studio? Can you walk us through the process of either?
I use an outside studio. I realized a long time ago that I was not a producer, nor did I have much interest in becoming one. My passion is in the writing itself, though I do produce demos in my home studio. I typically put the bones of the song together and work with someone else who can help me shape the sonic landscape of the song. Through pre-production meetings we’ll decide sonic landscape, instrumentation etc.
7. With 2020 upon us, what surprises do you have in store?
I’ll be releasing more singles and lyric videos, which will eventually culminate into the "Beauty and Blemishes” album. Before this year, it had been almost 5 years since I’d released new music, so I’m really trying to focus on that for now. I’ve also been working on publishing a book of my original poetry. If all goes well, I will be able to wrap that up and get it out into the world next year.
