AUSTIN, TEXAS — Happy Veterans Day! We here at Patch hope all military vets are enjoying this day set aside to honor their service. If you're in Austin, that's pretty much assured as Austin was found to be the best in the country for veterans to live, according to a new report.

WalletHub, a personal finance website, has released its report on 2018’s Best & Worst Places for Veterans to Live, ranking Austin in the top slot. The report compares the 100 largest U.S. cities across 18 key metrics, ranging from share of military skill-related jobs to housing affordability to availability of VA health facilities.

The upshot: Austin was ranked No. 1 overall given the study's reckoning. Scores in various categories were assigned from 1 being the best to 50 denoting average. Austin ranked low in some of these categories, but managed to ascend to the top spot in the overall calculus.

Here are some scores in Austin across various categories:

  • 41st – Homeless Veterans per Veteran Population
  • 16th – Median Veteran Income (Adjusted for Cost of Living)
  • 52nd – % of Military Skill-Related Jobs
  • 7th – Veteran Unemployment Rate
  • 14th – Job Growth

Following closely behind in the 6th spot is the Dallas suburb of Plano. Fort Worth had a good showing in the 12th position. No other Texas cities made the top 20 list. Surprisingly, San Antonio — dubbed "Military City USA" given its abundance (albeit dwindling number) of military bases — was ranked 28th among the nation's biggest cities.

WalletHub analysts noted that Austin ranked highly in the areas of educational opportunities for veterans and the segment's low unemployment rate, but could use some work in terms of the number of vets living below the poverty line.

Other Texas cities ranked lower: Arlington and Dallas ranked 31st and 33rd, according to WalletHub. El Paso was 38th, Irving was 41st, Laredo 51st, Lubbock 53rd and Houston 56th.

The worst city for veterans? That dubious distinction was given to Detroit.
