Barton Creek Inches Closer To Flood Level
Creek reached 6.3 feet after Wednesday's heavy rains, less than two feet considered flooding, prompting warning from regulators.
AUSTIN, TX — The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for Barton Creek as river levels are poised to rise above flood stage by week's end, officials said on Wednesday.
Located at Loop 360 South Austin, Barton Creek is under the flood warning until Saturday. Weather officials said the river is forecast to exceed flooding stage by Friday evening.
By 1 p.m. on Wednesday, the creek had risen to 6.3 feet — less than two feet shy of flood-stage level at 8 feet. By nightfall, officials said, the water level is expected to rise to 9.5 feet. Those living in proximity of the body of water are highly urged to monitor the latest weather forecasts.

The creek is expected to fall below flood stage level by early Saturday, weather officials said.
"All persons with interests along the river should monitor the latest forecasts, and be prepared to take necessary precautions to protect life and property," NWS officials wrote in their advisory. "River stage forecasts are based on observed rainfall along with predicted rain. If actual rainfall varies from forecast values, forecast river stages will change."

Officials offered potentially life-saving advice for motorists: "Do not drive automobiles through flooded areas. Remember, 18 inches of water or less can carry away most vehicles, including trucks. If you see flood waters or come upon a flooded roadway, remember to turn around and do not drown."
