📰 News we're reading

1. As Fort Worth sludge site dries up, birders express concern for wildlife, loss of habitat (fortworthreport.org) — Birders and conservation-minded residents in Fort Worth are alarmed that the Village Creek Drying Beds, once a premier local birding hotspot, are now nearly dry and closed to the public after an oil-related sludge incident. City utility officials say they've stopped pumping water to prioritize sludge processing and emergency backup needs, raising questions about long-term habitat loss and public access.

2. Get Well, James Hinkle (fwweekly.com) — Fort Worth blues fans are rallying around local legend James "Gut-tar" Hinkle as he recovers from a rare, high-risk heart surgery at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital. His family says he's awake, talking, and facing a long recovery, and Hinkle is asking well-wishers to donate in his name to organizations that help musicians with medical bills instead of sending money directly.

3. Chinese Baptists hold biennial meeting at SWBTS (baptistpress.com) — Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth recently hosted about 250 Chinese Baptists from across the U.S. and Canada for a four-day biennial conference focused on missions and unity. Attendees worshiped, joined workshops in Mandarin and English, enjoyed local food, and toured the Fort Worth Stockyards, while leaders set new budgets, elected officers, and outlined future ministry priorities.

4. Fort Worth ISD working to adopt silent panic alert system to comply with Texas law (wfaa.com) — Fort Worth ISD is moving to install a silent panic alert badge system across its schools to comply with Texas' new Alyssa's Law, giving every employee a quick way to trigger lockdowns or call for help. Similar Centegix systems already in use in Argyle and Mansfield ISDs show how the technology can speed responses to medical issues and potential threats on campus.

5. Fort Worth woman saw her son shoot her husband after domestic fight, police say (star-telegram.com) — A northwest Fort Worth family is reeling after police say a 19-year-old stepson fatally shot his stepfather in a bedroom following a domestic fight over infidelity.
