With Tropical Storm Nicholas Looming, Houston ISD Announces Closure For Tuesday

Houston ISD officials announced that after-school activities and sports are canceled Monday and that buildings should be empty after 5 p.m.

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Independent School District announced Monday morning that school will be canceled for all its campuses Tuesday because of the risk of flooding presented by Tropical Storm Nicholas.

In a statement on the Houston ISD website, school officials announced that all after-school activities and sporting events are canceled for Monday and that people should not be in schools and school district buildings after 5 p.m.

Classes, both in-person and virtual, are canceled for Tuesday, when all offices and schools will be closed. Students will not be required to make up the missed school day.

According to National Weather Service Houston, Harris County is under a tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch. Parts of southeastern Harris County are under a storm surge warning.

Rainfall totals from Nicholas are expected to be between 8 and 16 inches with up to 20 inches possible in some locations.
