Police ID Man Killed By Car While Walking On N. Austin Sidewalk

Luis Cristobal Landeros, 50, was walking eastbound along the north curb line of East Anderson Lane before being hit by out-of-control car.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police on Tuesday identified the pedestrian killed last month as he walked along a sidewalk before being struck by an out-of-control vehicle in North Austin last month.

The incident dates to July 26 at around 8:40 a.m. along the 1100 block of East Anderson Lane westbound service road. A preliminary police investigation revealed that Luis Cristobal Landeros, 50, was walking eastbound along the north curb line of East Anderson Lane while the driver of a 2018 black Mitsubishi Mirage traveling westbound on East Anderson Lane lost control of the vehicle.

Careening onto the sidewalk, the car hit Landeros who was then hospitalized for medical treatment. The man succumbed to his injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital, and was pronounced dead at 9:19 am. In their press advisory, police didn't disclose if the driver faces charges as a result of the incident.

The investigation, meanwhile, continues. Police ask anyone with information regarding the incident to call detectives at (512) 974-3761. Those with information also can submit tips by downloading APD's mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android.

The incident marked Austin’s 36th fatal traffic crash of 2018, resulting in 37 fatalities this year, police said in referencing their running tally of deadly wrecks. Police noted that at this time in 2017, there were 32 fatal traffic crashes and 34 traffic fatalities.

The pedestrian death was the second one to occur back-to-back from one day to the other. The following day, on July 27, another pedestrian was killed while trying to cross a portion of Interstate 35 in the early morning hours. It also was the third such incident in as many days. Tennie Ross, 63, was killed along the 11600 block of Manchaca Road at around 10:36 p.m. on July 29.
