• UT Permian Basin names veteran law enforcement leader as new police chief (star-telegram.com) — A new police chief is taking over security at UT Permian Basin in Odessa, with veteran lawman James "Matt" Mull starting Oct. 5 after more than 30 years in Texas law enforcement. University leaders say his experience in investigations, risk management, and campus safety will guide efforts to protect students, faculty, and staff as the school heads into a new semester.
   

• AI figuring heavily into energy industry's future (star-telegram.com) — Odessa oilman Kirk Edwards and economist Ray Perryman say artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming essential to the Permian Basin's oil and gas operations, from drilling decisions to equipment maintenance. They argue AI, paired with local gas and water resources, could attract power-hungry data centers to West Texas, turning pipeline constraints into new economic opportunities if safeguards and smart planning are in place.
