📰 News we're reading

1. Hays County wins $39 million for Centerpoint Road rail overpass project (cbsaustin.com) — Drivers in San Marcos can expect a major safety and traffic upgrade on Centerpoint Road, thanks to a $39.2 million federal grant for a new rail overpass. Hays County and the city will elevate the road over Union Pacific tracks, add four lanes, and build shared-use paths for walkers and cyclists. Officials say the project will ease backups and improve emergency response as the area grows.

2. City of San Marcos relaunches e-scooter program (kvue.com) — San Marcos has relaunched its e-scooter program with 150 Lime scooters now available downtown, on the Texas State campus, and on the east side of I-35. Riders 18 and older can use them 24/7, with discounted fares for residents enrolled in programs like SNAP, WIC, Medicaid, or Pell Grants. Certain areas, including the river and greenbelts, remain no-ride zones.

3. Texas State University Adds Helicopter Training as Aviation Network Expands Across Four States (afm.aero) — Texas State University is rolling out new helicopter flight training for its Aviation Science students through its San Marcos campus, partnering locally with Veracity Aviation at Seguin-Guadalupe Regional Airport. San Marcos–based students can now pursue a structured path into rotor-wing careers while also benefiting from expanded fixed-wing training options across Texas and other states, all tied into the university's B.A.A.S. degree.

4. Amarillo City Council to discuss camera policy after former officer's arrest (abc7amarillo.com) — San Marcos is among at least 10 Texas cities that have paused or ended use of Flock license plate reader cameras over privacy and data-sharing concerns. As Amarillo's council now reexamines its own camera policies after a former officer's alleged misuse, the debate highlights the same surveillance and civil-liberties questions San Marcos leaders and residents are already confronting.
