ACROSS AMERICA — If you were waiting for Prime Day to buy that Amazon Kindle or Echo, you will have to wait a little longer.

The e-commerce giant announced Tuesday it plans to postpone its annual Prime Day sale in the United States due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to multiple reports. This will be the first time the event hasn’t been held on the same day in all participating countries.

Prime Day, which launched in 2015, is typically held in mid-July.

A new date has not been announced, but the company expects to still hold the event later this year, Amazon said in a statement.

Rumors surrounding a Prime Day delay first surfaced in April when Reuters reported Amazon would delay the event until at least August. In July, CNBC said Prime Day had been pushed to October.

The Prime Day postponement comes as Amazon continues to grapple with the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

At the height of the pandemic, the company scaled back on speedy deliveries of nonessential items, put new grocery delivery customers on a waitlist and hired more workers to accommodate increasing demand. One- and two-day deliveries didn’t return until May, according to USA Today.
