Arizona Teachers Plan March 28 'Day Of Action' In Tucson

The teachers plan to build on momentum from last week's #RedforEd campaign.

TUCSON, AZ – Teachers in Tucson plan a "Day of Action" for March 28. It's part of a statewide campaign that includes an event at the state capital. The teachers are looking to build on momentum from last week's #RedforEd campaign that saw people wearing red to school to call attention to low teacher pay.

The organizers – which include representatives from Save our Schools Arizona, Arizona Educators United, and the Arizona PTA – say that in addition to the action at the state capital, they have events planned for Phoenix and in northern Arizona, as well.

"We want to ensure students have access to highly qualified and experienced teachers, that educators are compensated fairly, and to improve the educational environment," Noah Kavelis, a public school teacher and lead organizer of Arizona Educators United, said. "These are all things Arizonans want in order to improve our state's future."

A study last year by the Morrison Institute at Arizona State University found that – when adjusted for statewide cost of living, elementary school teacher pay in Arizona is the lowest in the nation while high school teacher pay is 50th.

The events on March 28 will take place from 4 p.m. through 6 p.m. so they won't interfere with school hours.
