UPDATE: Shelter-In-Place At Thomas Nelson Community College Lifted
The alert followed a nearby shooting that left two dead.

HAMPTON, VA - Thomas Nelson Community College’s Hampton campus was ordered to shelter in place as a “precautionary measure” Thursday afternoon following a shooting in the area that police said left two dead.
The shelter-in-place was lifted shortly after 2 p.m., and the campus returned to normal activities.
Officers with the nearby Newport News Police responded to a crash at 11 a.m. Thursday and found two men shot to death in a silver van, police said.

A witness pointed out a possible suspect fleeing the scene, and when two officers encountered a man matching the witness’ description, they each shot at him, police said.
The suspect was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his abdomen, and police believe there is another suspect on the loose, police said.

The second suspect is described by police as a “black male wearing a blue jacket.”
Four other area schools were put on lockdown during the incident, police said.
The school tweeted the initial alert at 1:03 p.m., and an apparent screenshot of an alert sent to students showed a text message sent at 12:21 p.m.
Thomas Nelson Community College is a two-year college in Hampton, Virginia.
