ACROSS AMERICA — Voters across the country headed to the polls Tuesday in state and local elections, some with national significance.

In Minneapolis, voters are deciding whether to replace the police department in Minneapolis, where the 2020 murder of George Floyd, a Black man, with a police officer's knee on his neck sparked a national reckoning on police brutiality, racism, inequality and colonial transgressions.

In New York City, residents will elect a new mayor. A tight gubernatorial race in Virginia is seen as referendum on Joe Biden's presidency. The New Jersey gubernatorial race, similarly, is a key test of conservatism.

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon said the 2021 elections are "a great dress rehearsal for 2022," when midterm elections offer voters a chance to express their approval, or disapproval, of Biden's presidency so far, and decide the balance of power in Congress and statehouses across the country.
