South San Antonio ISD To Close Three Schools Amid Enrollment Drops

To stem financial losses fueled by enrollment drops, Athens Elementary, Kazen Middle schools to close along with alternative school.

SAN ANTONIO, TX — The South San Antonio Independent School District board of trustees late Wednesday voted to close three of its schools due to low enrollment district-wide, according to media reports.

Enrollment at South San ISD has dropped from 9,959 to 9,638 students, which has resulted in a $2.4 million loss in revenue, the San Antonio Express-News reported via its mysa.com website. Officials added that 41 percent of classrooms are empty amid projections showing an enrollment decrease, according to the report.

In three years alone, enrollment has decreased by 345 students or 3.46 percent, officials said.

To stem the losses, district unveiled a plan centered on transferring students to other facilities ahead of the school closures. Students at Athens Elementary will be transferred to Carrillo and Price elementary schools; those attending Kazen Middle will transfer to Dwight and Zamora middle schools; and students in the district’s alternative school will be transferred to another school district.

Expected savings from the plan's implementation totals some $3.1 million, according to the report.
