Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, Son Of Jeb, Endorses Donald Trump

'From Team Bush, it's a bitter pill to swallow,' the younger Bush told GOP operatives in his quasi-endorsement of man who insulted his pa.

AUSTIN, TX -- This will make for an awkward family Thanksgiving dinner: Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush -- son of Jeb! who was humiliated by Donald Trump during the presidential campaign -- is now rallying Republicans to vote for his father's nemesis, according to a published report.

The Texas Tribune reported that the younger Bush says it's time to put aside personal animosity and get behind The Donald for president, if only to defeat Hillary Clinton in November. He made the remarks at a gathering of GOP activists on Saturday.

"From Team Bush, it's a bitter pill to swallow, but you know what? You get back up and you help the man that won, and you make sure that we stop Hillary Clinton," the younger Bush said, according to video of the remarks recorded by an audience member that was obtained by the Texas Tribune.

During the GOP presidential campaign that led to Trump's nomination, the real estate mogul was relentless in his verbal attacks on Jeb! The land commissioner's reference of his sort-of endorsement being a "bitter pill" to swallow is no overstatement. As evidence, here is just a sampling of the mean things Trump said about his pa:

  • "Jeb is having some kind of a breakdown. He's an embarrassment to his family. He has to bring his mother out and walk his mother around at 90 years old. I think it's a very sad situation that's taking place."
  • "Frankly, he's a stiff. He's not a guy who can be president. He doesn't have what it takes to be president."
  • "He's a desperate person. He's a sad and a pathetic person. He doesn't even use his last name in his ad."
  • "He's a sad person who has gone absolutely crazy. I mean, this guy is a nervous wreck."
  • "[Bush] goes around saying, 'I'm the only one with the courage to go after Trump.' What courage is it?"
  • "He says nasty things and I put him down on the dais and he goes away like a little sheep."

And that's just in one interview, with CNN's Wolf Blitzer.

Trump has been dropping in the polls against Clinton, particularly following his verbal attack of a Gold Star family that spoke at the Democratic National Convention. Khizr and Ghazala Khan made an appearance at the convention, with the family patriarch taking Trump to task for his proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country should he be elected president.

The Khans lost a son, Humayun Khan, an American Muslim killed by a suicide bomber in Iraq in 2004. Khan served as a captain in the U.S. Army, and was killed in defense of his country.

Rather than letting them say their peace, Trump went on a four-day rampage against the Khans for their appearance. The ensuing backlash has prompted even some fellow Republicans to repudiate Trump.

But long before the 'Never Trump" movement included fellow Republicans in its ranks, the Bush family distinguished themselves among political figures with their monolithic non-support of the reality-star-turned-politician.

Neither Jeb! or George W. Bush along with their dad, George H.W. Bush -- all of whom Trump has insulted -- attended the Republican National Convention that nominated the real estate developer as his party's choice of president.

That's why the semi-endorsement of family scion George P. Bush in breaking from his father is raising some eyebrows. But the young Bush is a member of the GOP Victory committee, so his call for support of the GOP standard bearer is somewhat understandable.

But still. Come November, that dissent might make for a pretty awkward Thanksgiving meal.
