Center for the Arts

Join us as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Jazz4Justice™, an award-winning partnership between the George Mason University Jazz Program and Northern Virginia's legal community. For a quarter century, Jazz4Justice has demonstrated the power of music to unite communities, raise awareness of the justice gap, and support access to civil legal services for those who cannot afford an attorney.
Recognized by the legal profession and honored with George Mason University's Jack Wood Award for Town-Gown Collaboration, Jazz4Justice has become a model for meaningful community engagement. In partnership with Legal Services of Northern Virginia, proceeds from this concert help provide free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and families facing issues such as housing, domestic violence, consumer protection, family law, veterans' services, and public benefits. Through volunteer attorneys and dedicated legal advocates, LSNV works every day to help ensure that justice is not determined by one's ability to pay.
The evening will feature the George Mason Jazz Program performing swinging classics from the golden age of the big band, celebrating both the enduring spirit of jazz and the remarkable partnership that has helped strengthen our community for twenty-five years.

Bards Alley presents Hearts on the Table author Susan Metallo in conversation with Alice Scott and Andrew Joseph White
Susan Metallo visits Bards Alley to discuss her new YA novel Hearts on the Table, a reimagining of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night set during World War I. Join us for the conversation, moderated by bookseller/author Alice Scott and guest author Andrew Joseph White (Hell Followed with Us)!
Boasting an ensemble of queer, trans, and neurodivergent characters, Hearts on the Table follows 17-year-old Violet as she navigates various romantic entanglements on the island where she has been shipwrecked. It is recommended for readers ages 14 and up. Copies will be available for purchase and a post-discussion signing at Bards Alley.
RSVP for free here: eventbrite.com/e/susan-metallo-with-alice-scott-and-andrew-joseph-white-hearts-on-the-table-tickets-2002810130013?aff=ebdsoporgprofileABOUT THE BOOKViolet is used to winning—with her mathematical mind, no one stands a chance of beating her at cards, or much of anything else. So, when her wrathful father threatens to marry her and her trans twin brother Seb to the highest bidders, she’s certain they can escape England, even with a war on. But before they reach safety in Italy, a U-boat sinks their ship, and Violet washes up on a small island, on the wrong side of enemy lines, desperate to find her missing twin.
To earn passage to the mainland, where she hopes Seb has landed, Violet disguises herself as a man and accepts a job delivering love poetry for melancholy pacifist Teo, the island’s irritating golden boy. The object of his affection, fair Olivia, is less than enchanted, but she is intrigued by the handsome delivery boy—Violet in disguise. While Violet struggles to sidestep Olivia’s attentions, she’s vexed by her own inconvenient but undeniable attraction to Teo. Add a mysterious newcomer, who converts the love triangle into a square, and Olivia’s autistic sister, who’s concocting a devilish revenge against the island’s biggest bully, and odds are things will only get messier.

Fortunately, playing the odds is Violet’s specialty.
In a twisty transformation of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, populated with queer, trans, and neurodivergent characters, Violet’s bold prose alternates with verse chapters from the perspective of autistic musical prodigy Faustina. Susan Metallo’s whip-smart writing and the fresh wartime setting make for a witty, elegant, and high-stakes exploration of love, loss, friendship, and identity.ABOUT THE AUTHORSusan Metallo is a neurodivergent author and youth services librarian. Reasons To Hate Me, her debut novel, was an Indies Introduce Selection for Summer/Fall 2025. She serves as regional advisor for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators in New Mexico. “My intentions for Hearts on the Table,” she writes, “were to honor the neurodivergent and LGBTQIA+ experiences of the early twentieth century with a balance of accuracy and hope, acknowledging the challenges and discrimination while focusing on agency and joy.”

Climate Action NOW (CAN) 501c3 (EIN: 2679837) is a conservation nonprofit, celebrating nature-based climate solutions to boost biodiversity, improve soil health and water infiltration rates, cool temperatures, purify the air and maximize carbon drawdown!
We educate the public on environmental and nature-based climate solutions through FREE monthly film screenings, followed by a discussion with expert panelists, at Cinema Arts Theatres in Fairfax, Virginia, hosting more than 3.1K attendees since December 2023. Additionally, we promote and educate the public about native plants, invasive removal, mini meadows in our yards and the need for mega meadows on data center campuses.
To support our work, we are hosting our inaugural fundraiser, Sunday afternoon, October 25, 2026 and we'd love to see you there! Historically, program expenses — including film licensing fees, and theatre rental— have been covered personally by our volunteers. To continue providing highquality, accessible programming, we are seeking the support of those who share our commitment to environmental resilience.

— 🌱 Rethinking the American Lawn: An Exciting Shift to No-Mow Landscapes Monoculture lawns dominate 40 million acres across the U.S. demanding billions of gallons of water every day while offering nothing in return for our local ecosystems. It is time to trade the resource-heavy, monoculture grass for a living solution: biodiverse, low-grow, no-mow landscapes along with sections of mini pocket meadows. This event tackles the urgent necessity of removing traditional lawns to combat rising temperatures and ecological collapse. Discover how replacing turf grass with native, low-maintenance alternatives can:

Slash water use drastically, easing the strain on our shared resources.

Boost water infiltration rates to prevent runoff, erosion, and urban flooding.

Supercharge carbon drawdown by building deep, healthy root systems that store carbon in the soil.

Helps purify the air and reduce noise.

Lowers the heat.

Beautifies, which improves quality of life and increases property values.

Join us to learn how converting our lawns into a thriving, biodiverse habitat can reverse the horrific ecological devastation that surrounds us. States out West have begun mandating this much-needed pivot. Pennsylvania’s Department of Conservation and Natural resources has a Lawn-to-Habitat Program!
