📰 News we're reading

1. Why Salt Lake City is a Great Place to Bike (wasatchmag.com) — Salt Lake City residents have an unusually rich biking scene, from the massive weekly 999 ride at 9th and 9th to an expanding network of green-painted bike lanes and the 9 Line Trail. The piece highlights how city infrastructure, GREENbike stations, and nearby Wasatch Mountain trails make it easy and welcoming for locals and visitors to explore the area on two wheels.

2. 5 people rescued from basement in overnight fire (abc4.com) — Fire crews, including Salt Lake City Fire, helped rescue five people trapped in a West Valley basement after an overnight house fire that destroyed two homes and a carport. All six occupants were hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and officials are still investigating the cause while reminding residents to maintain heaters, wiring and lithium-ion batteries to reduce fire risks at home.

3. Great Salt Lake dust: A problem Utah can't afford to fix or ignore (ksl.com) — Salt Lake City residents are facing growing health and financial risks from dust blowing off the shrinking Great Salt Lake, with researchers estimating $116 million in annual health costs. Experts and state officials disagree on how urgent the crisis is, but largely agree that restoring water to the lake is ultimately cheaper and more effective than massive engineered dust-control projects.

4. Utah football's successful weekend included snagging another verbal commit (deseret.com) — Utah fans in Salt Lake City just watched the Utes beat Kansas at Rice-Eccles Stadium while hosting more than 20 recruits, including new 2027 commit Brandon Richards from Texas. Coaches say the game-day atmosphere and strong in-state football talent are key to building Utah's future defensive backfield and keeping local prospects interested in the program.
