VA Trooper Hospitalized After I-495 Foot Chase Ends With Arrest In D.C.
A Virginia State Police trooper was hospitalized after being hit during a foot chase on I-495 near Telegraph Road, authorities say.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — A Virginia State Police trooper is in stable condition at a hospital after being struck by a vehicle during a foot chase on Interstate 495 near Telegraph Road, according to Virginia State Police.
The incident began shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday, when a trooper attempted to stop a black Chrysler 300 for expired temporary registration on Interstate 495 southbound at the Mixing Bowl, according to police.
The vehicle did not stop and a pursuit began. Additional troopers later joined the chase.

The chase continued onto Interstate 495 eastbound, where the driver rear-ended a tractor-trailer east of Telegraph Road, according to police. The driver then got out of the vehicle and ran across all lanes of the interstate and into the City of Alexandria. Troopers followed on foot.
During that foot chase on the interstate, the trooper who had attempted the initial stop was struck by an uninvolved vehicle, state police reported. The trooper was injured and taken to an area hospital.

The driver then went to the Eisenhower Avenue Metro station, fare-evaded and boarded a train. State police said that, with help from multiple law enforcement agencies and Metro's camera network, the suspect was located at L'Enfant Plaza station in Washington, D.C.
Metro Transit Police identified the suspect there, and a struggle followed during the arrest, according to VSP.

The suspect was identified as 57-year-old Gregory S. Newton of Springfield. Newton faces Virginia charges of eluding, hit and run, possession of a controlled substance, and driving while suspended, according to police. Metro Transit Police have also charged Newton with assault on a police officer.
The incident remains under investigation. VSP did not release additional details about the vehicle that struck the trooper or say when Newton is expected to appear in court.
