Arlington Health Inspections: Popeyes, Chasin' Tails, Continental

Arlington County inspectors cited 11 restaurants and food establishments on March 28-31 for 37 health code violations.

ARLINGTON, VA — Officials from Arlington County Public Health inspected several restaurants and food establishments in Arlington County on March 28-31.

Violations noted below involve issues that would typically require a re-inspection if not corrected, or those that are more likely than other violations to contribute to food contamination.

At Chasin' Tails restaurant, the health inspector saw food employees putting on gloves before washing their hands. The inspector told the restaurant that food preparation employees must clean their hands and exposed portions of their arms immediately before engaging in food preparation to prevent cross contamination when changing tasks.

A health inspector saw cooked chicken fingers held at room temperature at the Chelsea Market & Deli. The person in charge told the inspector that they were cooked and would be served before lunch was over.

The inspector also saw whole portions of deli meat that were not labeled with the date opened. Chelsea Market & Deli was told to make sure all cooked or ready-to-eat packaged foods are labeled with the date they were opened, in order to ensure they are served or discarded within seven days.

A health inspector noticed several areas of the kitchen at the Monument Restaurant at the Comfort Inn on S. Glebe Rd. in need of cleaning. The areas included refrigeration units, walls and cook-line hood vents.

At Tivoli Pastry and Gourmet, a health inspector saw a food worker portioning deli meats with bare hands. The inspector instructed Tivoli to minimize bare hand and arm contact with exposed food to reduce the potential for contamination.

The handles of refrigerators and a walk-in cooler, and the exterior of containers at the Popeye's Chicken on N. Pershing Drive were found to be unclean and had food debris buildup, according to the inspector.

A fly catcher was seen hanging over clean dishes at La Cocina VA. The person in charge moved the fly catcher during the inspection.

"In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations," according to Virginia Department of Health's website.
