Authorities Make Dramatic Rescue of Ducklings in Arlington

A Wakefield High School administrator dialed authorities after seeing the ducklings stuck in a storm drain.

A dramatic rescue went down near Wakefield High School in Arlington on Monday, but it wasn't people who needed rescuing -- it was ducklings.

An administrator at the school called authorities on the morning of May 9 to tell them that ducklings had fallen into a storm drain near the entrance, according to an ARLnow.com report.

The Animal Welfare League of Arlington sent an officer, who came upon a mother duck lingering near the trapped ducklings. The officer used a net to reach deep into the pipe and scoop out the tiny ducklings.

A total of six ducklings were rescued, and none appeared to be injured.

The ducklings were put into a crate and set nearby, allowing the mother to cautiously return without humans around -- but she never did, according to the report, so they were taken to the shelter and given to a wildlife rehabber in Falls Church to be cared for until they can be released into the wild.
