Deaths Of Arlington Woman, Man In December Ruled Murder-Suicide

ARLINGTON, VA — The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has determined that the cause and manner of the death of an East Falls Church married couple to be a murder-suicide.

Arlington County Police responded around 5:18 p.m., on Dec. 7, 2023 to a residence in the 2400 block of N. Powhatan Street for a welfare check. Police located a deceased man and woman, who showed signs of intentional carbon monoxide poisoning.

The deceased were identified as Maria Theista Macknight and Gregory Cunningham, both 72, of Arlington.

In March, the medical examiner determined that Macknight’s death was a homicide caused by carbon monoxide poisoning. Cunningham’s death was ruled a suicide with cause being carbon monoxide poisoning.
