ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington County Animal Shelter was deluged with emails and phone calls last week from people suggesting names for and offering to adopt the chicken Arlington County Animal Control had captured at the Pentagon.

"It was a busy week for everybody," said Chelsea Jones, the communications specialist with the Animal Welfare League of Arlington. "It's great because now we have a list going of people that would be interested in adopting chickens in the future, because we do get them fairly frequently and it's always a little bit difficult for us to find places where they can go live as pets."

The story of the chicken's capture was big — or at least strange — enough to make national news. Comedian Jimmy Fallon even sang a song about the bird on Wednesday's episode of "The Tonight Show."

"There's a chicken at the Pentagon and no one knows why," he sang, acoustic guitar in hand. "Are you a normal omnivore, an undercover spy? A chicken at the Pentagon, we're at a loss. Should we throw you in a prison or some barbecue sauce? A chicken at the Pentagon, oh what a crisis. Will you get 25 to life or 11 herbs and spices?"

Jones first heard about Fallon's performance when a co-worker showed her a video on YouTube.

"I'm not going to lie," she said. "At first, I thought that at some point in the past, he coincidentally had written the song. But she was like, 'No Chelsea, he wrote this yesterday. It was on TV yesterday. It was pretty exciting."

Although there is no definitive answer as to where the chicken came from and how it ended up at the Pentagon, Jones guessed that it probably had wandered away from someone's back yard.

"Unfortunately, in spite of the fact that most people cannot legally own chickens in Arlington, they wander, and our officers inevitably get called to go pick them up," she said. "We get chickens, roosters and, occasionally, ducks."

Despite all the attention and notice the Pentagon chicken received, its owners did not contact the shelter within five days to claim it.

Animal Control Officer Kelley Davis adopted the chicken and brought it to her little farm in rural Virginia.

"She has chickens and goats and they're all companion animal, so she's going to have a nice long life with with the Officer Davis and have lots of chicken friends," Jones said.
