Centreville Boys Lacrosse 5-0 for the Season

Unbeaten Wildcats maintain string of decisive victories, and other news from Centreville High School.

Centreville varsity boys lacrosse concluded a stretch of four away games during 19-23 March. The Wildcats maintained their unbeaten status and are now 5-0 for the season.   

played TC Williams, beating the Titans 12 to 4. Junior Attack Nathan Marks was the leading scorer, with (4) goals for the night. Other Wildcats adding to the 12-point total were: Zack Sikora with three, Andy Balberde with two, Tyler Vennergrund with two and Kevin Hagan with one. Zack Sikora, Andy Balberde, Kevin Hagan and Matt DeVera gave assists. Defenders Jake Hyde, Antonio Choi and Kevin Brawner were standouts during the game and helped Goalie Kent Roy limit the Titans to a meager four points. 

The Wildcats traveled to West Springfield two short days later, to beat the Spartans in a closer match, 14 to 10. Although West Springfield scored first, Wildcat Zack Sikora quickly answered with a Centreville goal and the Wildcats remained in control for the rest of the game. Once again, Centreville’s goals were shared among this year’s strong offensive lines.  Attack Nathan Marks had (5) goals for the evening; Midfielder Zack Sikora had (4); Andy Balberde had (2); Kevin Hagan had (1); Matt DeVera had (1); and Tyler Vennergrund had (1). Assists were given by David Weisbrodt, Chase Heiner, Kevin Hagan, Andy Balberde and Zack Sikora. Centreville had a strong defensive showing, with solid performance by Antonio Choi, Jake Hyde and Goalie Kent Roy.

With barely 24 hours to rest up, the team participated in the Mt. Vernon High School lacrosse tournament on Friday night. During the first round of competition, the Wildcats played Marshall and won decisively in a 16-7 match. Midfielders Andy Balberde and Zack Sikora, along with Attack Nathan Marks, led the Wildcats in scoring three goals each. Also contributing points to the scoreboard were midfielders Kevin Hagan with two goals and Chase Heiner with one goal. Attack scorers were Tyler Vennergrund with two goals and Danny Meador and Andrew Belloli with one goal each. Assisting the various goals for the evening were Tyler Vennergrund with three assists; Nathan Marks and Andy Balberde with two assists each; and Kevin Hagan, Chase Heiner, Sean Doyle and David Weisbrodt with one assist each. Great goalie work was given by junior Andrew Kelsey and junior Pat Prosser, who was loudly welcomed back from shoulder surgery and recuperation. Freshman Kainoa O’Connor showed strong defensive skills playing the Long Stick Middie (LSM) position. Junior John Clements and sophomore Kevin Hagan provided the Wildcats with consistent face-off wins throughout the game. 

Saturday’s rain and drizzle was not a problem for the team during the tournament’s championship game against Lake Braddock. Despite the slippery and muddy conditions, the Wildcats defeated the Bruins, 12—5. Zack Sikora led the scoring with four goals; Attack David Weisbrodt had a “hat trick” with three goals; Kevin Hagan had two goals and Andy Balberde, Nathan Marks and Carson McEver each scored one goal for the Wildcats.  Providing assists on the scores were Zack Sikora with five, Andy Balberde and Nathan Marks with two, and David Weisbrodt with one. The Centreville team showed especially strong on “man down” play throughout the game. Defensive standouts were Kevin Brawner, Antonio Choi and Nick Ziegler. John Clements had another successful day winning face-offs.

The boys varsity team has a week off from games and will next play in the Woodgrove Tournament, during the first part of spring break (2-6 April).

Boys varsity soccer: Centreville won 3—1 over TC Williams in a recent game. Louis Navarro, Brendan Miller, Fernando Muzo all scored goals for the Wildcats. Three assists came from Connor Coward and 16 saves from Kurt Michaels.

Centreville tied 2-2 against West Springfield when they played last week. Brendan Miller and Andreas Garcia scored goals, while assists came from Andreas Garcia and Louis Navarro. Jason Hoerneke had 14 saves.

Girls varsity tennis: On Thursday, March 22 against Herndon, Centreville won 7-2.

At #1 singles Jamie Schoshinski played against a very seasoned player - she lost 5-10

#2 singles Sarah Alberstein won 10-7

#3 singles Sapna Rao won 10-1

#4 singles Tanya Kumar won 10-5

#5 singles Jessica Jassal won 10-3

#6 singles Esther Yoon came from behind to win in a ties breaker 11-10

 

At #1 doubles Jamie and Sarah came close, but lost 9-11

#2 doubles Sapna and Esther won 10-5

#3 doubles Sue Jung and Sierra Dimmer won 10-5
