Boys basketball: The Wildcats Boys Basketball team lost the first game of the Concorde District portion of their season, falling to Robinson in an away game, 54-44. Evan Fuller scored 15 points and had 9 rebounds and 4 assists, while Mitch Mahoney scored 12 points. Centreville led the game 28-24 at halftime before Robinson surged in the second half to secure the victory.

With the loss, Centreville falls to a 4-8 record, 0-1 in the District. They are scheduled to take on Herndon and this week, both home games starting at 7:30pm, on Jan. 6th and 10th, respectively.

Girls basketball: In their first game following the Winter Break, the Centreville Lady Wildcats lost their district opener to the Robinson Rams on Jan. 6th, by a score of 62-57. Chaney Forbush led the Cats’ scoring with 14, while Jenna Green added 10.

CVHS's record now stands at 8-4 and 0-1 in the district. The JV and Freshman teams both beat their Rams counterparts on the same night. The Lady Wildcats are scheduled to take on Herndon High School in Herndon on Tuesday, Jan. 10th.

Wrestling: The Centreville Wildcats ended 2011 with some team hardware, as their roadtrip to NC ended in a 3rd place finish. Centreville wrestled eight matches against NC and Georgia teams during Dec. 30-31, winning 6 of their 8 duals. There were 32 teams in the Knightdale Dual tournament and when the event was over, the Wildcats came in 3rd place in their division. Centreville started the bracket competition a little shaky, but then went on a 3-0 winning streak, beating host Knightdale, Ashe County and Rocky Mount high schools for their third-place finish.

Among the highlights:
113-pounder Michael Vu had a breakout weekend, going 6-2 as his HS wrestling skills develop. For the first time this season, the Cowman brothers—Josh (126) and Jerry (138)—stepped on the mat together, winning a few matches by pin. Coming to life was 152-pound Will Fulton, who went 6-2 during the Duals. At 160 pounds, Centreville’s Tyler Love continues to dominate, going 8-0 with little to no real competition. Love is now 23-3 on the season.

Earning his 100th career win and also conquering everyone that stepped on the mat to face him was senior Ryan Sepulveda. Sepulveda picked up his 100th career win after pinning his Knightdale HS opponent mid-way through the first period. During Centreville’s final consolation match against Rocky Mount, Sepulveda was matched up against the top-ranked AAA 170-pounder in the state of North Carolina. Sepulveda recorded a late takedown in the first period, and picked up two more takedowns in the third period to defeat his opponent, 6-1.

At 220 pounds, Junior Joey Steinbach had a good tournament, going 5-3 with a few pins for himself and the team. Steinbach was bumped up to wrestle the Ashe County HS senior for the competition and helped the team collect the win. The Centreville Big Cat, Jason Park went 4-2, picking up two decisive pins, helping the wildcats earn critical team decisions.

After that high-flying weekend, the MatCats came back to reality, beginning its Concorde District meet schedule. On Wednesday, Jan. 4th, the Wildcat wrestlers took on Robinson and high schools. Michael Vu and Connor Mitchell put the CATS up 9-6, but that lead soon vanished as the Rams went on a 4-match run. Ryan Sepulveda, currently ranked fourth in the state, added to the Wildcat score with an 11-0 major decision over Josh Trowell.

The only other win for Centreville came from 220-pounder Joey Steinbach, who pinned Zach Outzen at the 3:38 mark of his match. Against Westfield, Mitchell picked up his second win of the night with an exciting 5-4 win over Ben Cameron, and Sepulveda won a closely contested decision over Tyler Morson.
