Newfoundland Dog Perishes in Centreville Fire

Incident took place Saturday afternoon while resident was away from home.

A Newfoundland dog apparently perished in a home fire in Centreville on Saturday. Firefighters responded to the fire at the Centreville home, on Clarendon Springs Place, Saturday at about 1:30 p.m., according to Capt. Randal Bittinger.

The fire, which is still under investigation, damaged the kitchen, Bittinger said. A neighbor may have heard the smoke alarms and called police while a resident was away. There was no dollar estimate on the fire damage.

Bittinger said a dog was found deceased at the home; firefighters called county animal shelter authorities to come get another dog found at the home. A neighbor said the deceased dog was a Newfoundland.
