Overdose Death of Centreville High Student Leads to Seven-Year Prison Sentence for Classmate: Report

Alexia Springer, 17, was found dead in her home; David Evers of Clifton entered an Alford plea in September.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — A 19-year-old man will serve seven years in prison for providing a prescription medication that caused the overdose death of his high school classmate, according to a media report.

David Evers, of Clifton, received a 12-year sentence, with five years suspended, in a hearing Wednesday in the Fairfax Circuit Court, radio station WTOP reported.

In September, Evers entered an Alford plea to charges related to the death of Alexia Springer, 17, a fellow student at Centreville High School. Springer was found dead on March 1, 2016, in her home on Coleman Court in Centreville following a night of partying with Evers and other students.

In an Alford plea, a defendant doesn’t admit guilt, but concedes that the government has enough evidence to convict him.Evers made the plea in response to charges of distribtion of morphine, according to WTOP.

At the time of her death, Springer was a junior at Centreville High, a homecoming princess and a varsity runner, according to the Washington Post. Evers was a senior heading to college, but he was known among classmates for procuring and distributing prescription pills, a prosecutor said.

On the night that she overdosed, Springer took a morphine pill from Evers and a handful of other prescription medications, including Xanax, and drank an alcoholic beverage, according to media accounts. A medical examiner determined that her death was accidental, caused by acute poisoning from a combination of morphine, alcohol, alprazolam (Xanax), oxycodone and ethanol.

The Fairfax County police also arrested a Manassas man in September in connection with Springer's death. Daniel Armando Urrego, who was 19 at the time of the arrest, was charged with manufacturing, selling, giving, distributing or possessing with intent to manufacture, sell, give or distribute a controlled substance or an imitation controlled substance.
