Volleyball Squad Wins Tearjerker in ‘Bench-Clearing Celebration’
Also in this week's Westfield High sports review: field hockey team advances to regional semifinals, football team earns top northern region seed.

Tied at two sets apiece, Westfield’s (13-12) senior defensive specialist Alex Collier, who had been sidelined for the past month with a dislocated knee, entered the (12-12) match in the fifth and final set, knotted at 2-2. She leapt from the service line and racked up seven consecutive points to rally her team to 9-2 and an eventual 3-2 victory on Senior Night in her final home game.
Head Coach Jim Bour said he planned on sending Collier in for maybe two serves. Yet Collier powered through the pain and delivered what could be called the greatest highlight moment of the team's 2011 high school sports year. The bleachers cleared as the team and fans alike celebrated in tears of joy. The Bulldogs fell to (11-12) two days later in another tight match, but finished out the regular season above .500 for the first time since the team reached the state championship in 2008.
Westfield will play at home against at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the first round of the Concorde Championship.

Football team earns top seed in regionals
Defense wins football games. Friday night proved that colloquialism as turnovers ended the battle of the unbeaten between the Wildcats (8-1) and Bulldogs (9-0) in a defensive match up for the ages. Westfield, with a rarely seen stymied offense, relied on its 11 men on the opposite side of the ball to cap off a 13-10 victory in overtime to keep the Bulldogs’ undefeated run alive.
Kicker Matt Delaney split the uprights from 19-yards out to win the game after failed to capitalize on its ensuing overtime possession. Westfield senior defensive back Tyrone Walker recovered a Wildcat fumble on Centreville’s drive to give Delaney the shot at the game-winner, which sent the 2011 undefeated Bulldog team to the Northern Regional playoffs with the No.1-seed.
But first, Westfield will have to regroup on offense before they face an angry team that is looking to pull off an upset next week. Kendell Anderson rushed for just 25 yards on the night, approximately one-tenth of his output during each of the past two games, while the stingy Wildcat secondary also limited Quentin Basil to 31 yards receiving.
Westfield will play at home against Herndon at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 4.
