Westfield Boys’ 4X800 Wins Triple Crown

Relay wins all three postseason championships

Winning a postseason banner in any high school sport is an exceptional feat, especially in the Northern Region of Virginia—arguably the most competitive region in the state. But the varsity boys’ track 4X800 relay capped off its 2012 postseason in historic fashion earlier this month winning not just one championship, but all three: Concorde District, Northern Region and State Title.

Max Chambers, Nathan Kiley, Tyrone Walker, Jeff Edmondson and Steven Mitchell (who ran in place of Edmondson at states) entered the 2012 season in ‘The Zone’ and absolutely dominated the competition this spring. And down the stretch, these young men of the 4X800 earned a National No.1-ranking at the Penn Relays in Phily, New Jersey after running the fastest time in the US: 7:39.73.

“ is definitely the highlight of the regular season,” said Coach Kelly Deegan in a recent email interview with Patch.

However, the 4X800 was not the only successful Bulldog track and field event during the postseason. Westfield’s 4X400 added another state championship trophy to the case. And Kiley ran a personal best of 49.01 in the 400-meter, which helped him earn a spot on the highly coveted 2012 All-Met team last week. Meanwhile, teammate Tyrone Walker finished second in the 800-meter at both regionals and states. And the Bulldog boys’ team as a whole won districts, placed second in regionals and third at states.
