17 Health Violations At Del Ray Restaurant

ALEXANDRIA, VA — The City of Alexandria regularly conducts health inspections for local restaurants. The frequency of inspections on the type of food served and how it is prepared.

“In our experience, it is unrealistic to expect that a complex, full-service food operation can routinely avoid any violations,” states the Virginia Department of Health’s website.

Here are some of the violations from recent inspections in early August. Among the violations were rodent droppings at Lilian's Restaurant and 17 violations at Evening Star Cafe. Some of the violations were corrected during the inspections.

Chirilagua Pollo & Steak: 4112 Mt. Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22305, last inspection: Aug. 8 (follow up)

violations: whole rotisserie chickens not properly cooled within two and six hours, prep cooler not operating properly (corrected)

Del Ray Cafe: 205 E. Howell Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301, last inspection: Aug. 8

violations: employee did not wash hands after activity that could contaminate food, cooked potatoes and fries measured at improper temperature in ice bath (both corrected)

Evening Star Cafe: 2000 Mt. Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22301, last inspection: Aug. 9

violations: raw food stored over ready-to-eat food, potential cross contamination of raw foods, foods on menu without raw/undercooked food disclosure, some utensils not cleaned properly, unlabeled food containers, toxic cleaning materials not labeled (all 17 violations can be viewed by clicking the violations link)

violations: raw food stored over cooked vegetables, short ribs not properly cooled within six hours, pasta maker in need of cleaning, (all corrected)

violations: manufacture containers reused to store food, flies around sink (corrected)

violations: employee with open drinking container in kitchen, food handling without gloves, food items at salad bar measured at improper temperatures, (all corrected) salad bar and prep cooler units not operating properly

Waffle Shop: 3864 Mt. Vernon Ave, Alexandria, VA 22305, last inspection: Aug. 8

violations: refrigerator storing food not cold enough, one refrigerator not operating properly, dishes not being properly sanitized, rodent droppings in storage room
